Jamawar means "grown piece," and is the trade and technical term for a long shawl or shawl cloth. The technique of weaving jamawars was brought to India in the 15th century. The patterns used in early jamawars were made using weft threads of different hues which did not run through the entire width or length of the fabric. Instead, they were woven back and forth in order to achieve the desired design, comprised of color blocks. Jamawars became fashion staples among the European aristocracy during the 18th century. Jamawars today are still woven by loom in order to create intricate patterns. The tapestry technique is employed from start to finish. Its tapestry consists of various elements such as woven panels, borders, and fringes. Stunning features would usually be represented by floral or striped patterns. To clean jamawars, dry cleaning is recommended, especially for woolen stoles or shawls. When washing by hand, cold water must be used. After they have been washed, wring drying is highly discouraged. Rather, they must simply be laid flat to dry. Once the jamawars are dry, they can then be pressed using an iron, with a piece of cloth or paper placed between the fabric and iron. Jamawar shawls are comfortable yet very elegant to use. Designs can even feature attractive paisley prints. These shawls can be used every day, for both casual and formal occasions.
